James ...Jimmy... Hoffa was president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1957 until 1971.

From an early age, Hoffa was a union activist and leader who played a big role in the growth and development of the union across the United States.

During it's peak while Hoffa was leader, the labor union had 2.3million members.

Hoffa married Josephine Poszywak, an 18-year-old Detroit laundry worker in 1936. They had two children together: a son, James P Hoffa, and a daughter, Barbara Ann Crancer.

He was born in February 1913 in Brazil, Indiana, and died July 1982 in Detroit, Michigan.

He became involved in organized crime from the early years of his work with Teamsters.

What happened to Jimmy Hoffa's body?

Hoffa disappeared on July 30, 1975 and was declared legally dead in 1982.

At the time, he was travelling to Michigan to meet New Jersey Mafia boss Anthony Provenzano, although their relationship had soured since Hoffa had been released from prison.

He was 62-years-old the year he went missing.

He is believed to have been murdered by the mafia, although those reports have never been confirmed.

There have been several failed searches for Hoffa's body over the years.

What was said about Jimmy Hoffa's body?

In November 2021, it was reported that investigators received a tip that a former worker on a landfill site in Jersey City had said that his father told him he had buried Hoffa's body.

According to the New York Times, landfill worker Frank Cappola, who died in March 2020, told a friend that his father had confessed to being hired by a group of men to bury Hoffa's body in an underground steel drum.

FBI agents with search warrants arrived at a former landfill site in October to conduct a survey.

A spokesperson for the FBI told the NYT that data was currently being analyzed.
